• Let’s get nerdy! Learn about the tools and substrates artists of the past and
present are using – and how to pair them together.
• Learn mark-making techniques – It’s all in the wrist!
• Life drawing vs. photo reference drawing – how to use expressive marks to add
energy or emotion to your inking.
• Make it colorful! Learn how to add pigment to your inking – Tips on using various
types of inks, paints and applications.
Workshop Tutorial:
Students will create a pen and ink of a tree of their choice from a photo. (BYO photo or use one provided by the instructor!)
• 1 kneaded eraser (any brand)
• 1 white rubber eraser (any brand)
• 1 #2 or HB graphite pencil
• 1 11x14 (or close) sheets of watercolor paper (preferably hot press but cold press
works too!)
• 1 black drawing pen of the student’s choice – India ink, acrylic ink, fountain pen,
hard nib drawing pen, etc. (can be a ball-point if that’s all you have handy!)
