Creating Art 365 Days in 2013!

Ingrid Day 150, Florida
Artists, Ingrid A. Tronstad and Kristin Romberg are contemporary artists in Norway. This year they are working on a project that they describe, "like a diary, we create and post one pocket size art piece every day in 2013." Each day, regardless of where they are and what they are doing, the artists use Artist Trading Cards (traditionally 2.5 x 3.5in) to create a miniature piece of art and post it to their blog: this link to become a follower) They say, "the outcome is unknown - all we know is that in the end we will have a giant puzzle of 730 pieces of art. Our purpose is to challenge and inspire ourselves and others, and to exhibit the end result somewhere."

Screen Printing for Fine Lines & Details

The photo emulsion process is perfect for graphic and detailed works. It is the best method for screen printing digital images. Watch the video below from Speedball to see for step-by-step directions!

Find Speedball Photo Emulsion and Sensitizer here.

Below you will find two alternative methods to the Photo Emulsion method. Both use Screen Filler and Drawing Fluid instead of Photo Emulsion. The Screen Filler method involves a more organic process, it is great for painterly or hand-drawn prints.

We Carry Escoda Prado Travel Brushes!

Escoda Prado Synthetic Sable Travel Brush

We now carry Escoda's Prado Synthetic Sable Travel Brushes - a more cost effective way to experience Escoda's Travel Brushes!

Escoda Prado Synthetic Sable Travel Brush Set
Prado Synthetic Sable Brushes are made with synthetic fibers that are very similar to sable hair. The synthetic fibers imitate the properties (color, spring, and the ability to absorb liquids) that artists look for in a sable brush. Escoda takes this similarity even further by using a combination of three different diameters and three lengths of fibers to create a brush with the same brushstroke result as one made with natural sable hair. The travel brushes come with a cap that extends the handle for convenient use. These beautiful brushes are perfect for anyone who likes to work outside their home or studio.

The Poster Paint Sticks come in bright, vibrant colors that dry quickly. They can be used on paper, cardboard, wood, etc. When pressing lightly the results look like pastel, when pressing firmly the results look like poster paint. Each stick comes with a twist off cap.

Suitable for kids 3 to 7 years.

We Carry Richeson Shiva Series Oil Colors

Originally sold as Shiva Signature Oils, Richeson Shiva Series oils, were created in the late 1920's by Ramon Shiva, an artist who wanted to make a superior brand of oil paint for himself and his friends. During the 1940's and thru the 1950s, Shiva became the leading oil paint manufacturer in the United States. In the late 60's the company was sold because of illness and the quality went down. Then in 2002, Jack Richeson acquired the old formulas that made Shiva Oil the top brand in the United States.

Shiva Oils are permanent, and will not darken, yellow, fade or crack. They are made with pure, artist grade pigments combined with the finest refined linseed oil available. The oils are processed to ensure an even distribution of pigment, resulting in a buttery, even consistency.

New Class at the Southern Atelier

Join Mary Minifie February 22-24th from 9:30-4pm as she explores The Classic Still Life.

floral still life
by Mary Minifie
The Southern Atelier explains:

The aim of this workshop is to explore several aspects necessary to produce a good painting. The workshop will run for three days with 2 three hour sessions each day. At least one still life will be floral and one non-floral so students can choose what best suits their interests. The aim is to have a fairly finished painting in the size range of 11"x14" or 16"x20" by the end of the workshop.

COMPOSITION: The still lifes will already be set up in the interest of time, but we will discuss the ideas of color families, value contrasts, variety of size, color and value in the choice of objects. We will also discuss the abstraction of the value shapes and how they are arranged in the rectangle of the canvas.

COLOR NOTES: A lot of emphasis will be placed on observing the color notes in relation to each other. So much of the beauty of the painting is in the color and it is especially important to learn to observe the color correctly at outset of the painting.

EDGES: There are many edges from whisper soft to razor sharp and we will discuss how to see them, when to use them and how to make each kind of edge with the brush.

LIGHT EFFECT: A good painting should have a strong sense of light. We will discuss the visual order that is needed to create a sense of light, the lost and foundness involved in that order, the practice of "squinting" to find the lostness. We will also discuss color chroma, or intensity, in relation to light, and how to understand and mix seemingly difficult or unnamable colors.

Students are welcome to bring other paintings for a short critique on the third day.
Tuition $435
